Anniversary of the BP oil spill – Wellington Climate Justice Action

As part of an international ‘Day of Direct Action against Extraction’ commemorating the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster, a group of concerned individuals visited the Wellington offices of a number of the most prominent and reckless fossil fuel extraction companies operating in New Zealand.

The group included members of the Workers Party and Camp for Climate Action Aotearoa. Two photos of the actions are attached. 'Inside PEPANZ' is from the group's visit to Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of NZ - one of the largest lobbyists for the extractive industry in NZ. 'Outside' is outside PEPANZ, and shows a section of the activists involved.

Spokesperson Liz Willoughby-Martin said “Today we visited Todd Energy, the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand, New Zealand Oil and Gas, Straterra and Shell Oil. We confronted staff in all of these offices except NZ Oil and Gas, where we were locked out.”

“At the other sites we delivered the message loud and clear that these mining companies are not welcome in our communities,” said Ms Willoughby-Martin.

“We stand in solidarity with people resisting the recklessness of extraction projects and the fossil fuel industry around the globe. We stand in solidarity with Te Whanau A Apanui and those in Taranaki who face devastation of land, waters and communities if these corporates continue their pursuit of profit.”

“Our action today was one of many We are part of a global movement resisting unjust, destructive, profit-driven extraction. Today we took to the streets of Wellington and we are excited to see others take to the streets across the country and across the globe,” said Ms Willoughby-Martin.
