Iconic Punting attraction to reopen

Iconic Punting attraction to reopen

Two months after the devastating February 22 earthquake, one of the city’s leading tourist attractions is due to restart this Thursday.

Operated by Welcome Aboard (Tramway, Gondola and other activities in Christchurch and Hanmer Springs), Punting on the Avon has always held a special place in the hearts of Cantabrians.

“We know there are few tourists around, but we are keen to get back up and running for the locals, and what could be better than to sit back and cruise through our lovely Hagley Park,” says Welcome Aboard Managing Director Michael Esposito.

“We have always had strong local and international visitor support for our attractions, and our focus is on returning things to normal as soon as possible,” he says.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and his wife Jo plan to be the first ‘punters’ to mark the reopening of the operation.

“Jo and I are very keen to celebrate the return of this important tourist attraction to Christchurch city. We know tourism businesses have suffered huge financial setbacks because of the earthquakes and it’s great to see a positive step towards getting our Christchurch back up and running,” Mayor Parker says.
