Old people’s needs and contribution in focus at Age Concern’s Conference
Concerns over income security and the affects of being lonely, and worries associated with failing health and a lack of respect continue to dog New Zealand’s older citizens, says Age Concern.
Speaking at the organisation’s recent conference, president Liz Baxendine said the energy and enthusiasm of the current generation of older people had helped to build New Zealand as we know it today, but these seniors are not accorded the recognition they deserve.
“New Zealand mustn’t write-off older people as a burden or a silver tsunami that will eventually disappear,” Mrs Baxendine said.
“It is imperative that we maintain an acceptable quality of life for older people. That’s the hallmark of a successful society.”
She said older people still make a contribution to the country and this must be acknowledged and encouraged by the business community, Government agencies and politicians from every party.
“But for New Zealand, and the rest of the western world, increasing populations of older people are a fact of life and it’s a fact that governments and society leaders need to consider this.”
Mrs Baxendine said even in difficult financial times such as the country is experiencing now it is imperative to consider the needs of older people, and the contribution they can still make.
