Celebrating Anzac Day In Stratford
Across New Zealand and Australia, April 25 brings reflection, solemnity, realism and pride. This difficult mix of emotions gains public coherence through an old custom: the laying of wreaths.
Every year Stratford residents come together to create a number of wreaths which are then laid in the Hall of Remembrance on Broadway.
Stratford Mayor Neil Volzke says “ANZAC day is a time of remembrance that continues to increase in stature every year. The sacrifice made by others, has allowed our generation to enjoy the freedom and democracy that New Zealand offers”.
“Anyone interested in making wreaths can come to the War Memorial Centre on Thursday 21 April from 9:30 onwards. There will be some flowers provided for you to use, or you can bring your own”. Morning tea is provided for participants.
Those who prefer to drop off pre-made wreaths can do so between 1.00pm and 2.00pm directly to the Hall of Remembrance on Thursday 21 April.
The Hall of Remembrance will be open on ANZAC Day between 6.00 am and 3.00 pm.
Stratford will have a Dawn Service, RSA Parade, and Civic Service for those who wish to show their respect.
Mayor Neil Volzke says “The ANZAC day bond that has existed between countries and people for many decades continues to be as strong and unifying as ever. Let this always be the case”.
