Rodney to benefit from increased business services

Media release

24 March 2011

Rodney to benefit from increased business services

The Rodney region will soon benefit from greater business support as two major agencies join forces.

From 1 April, some services currently offered by Rodney Economic Development Trust will be taken on by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, an Auckland Council subsidiary.

The increased activity in the Rodney area will see the local office moved to Centreway Road in Orewa with three staff to directly support local businesses. Two of these positions will be filled by existing staff; Leanna Covacich as rural development specialist and Nicky Harnett as business advisor.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development chief executive Michael Redman stressed the organisation’s commitment to a local office and the enhancement of existing services.

“The rural districts are undergoing significant change. We are ensuring their role in our economy is understood and supported. We are working hard to stress their importance in our economic development strategy and spatial plan in particular,” says Mr Redman.

Rodney Economic Development Trust chief executive Valerie Freeman says more services will be available through the new office in the way of business events, training, and information and access to government funding schemes.

“We worked closely with former economic development agency Enterprise North Shore, which has now been incorporated into the new organisation and operates from a local office in Albany. With well developed business support programmes and excellent communications, Rodney businesses stand to benefit enormously,” says Ms Freeman.

Rodney Economic Development Trust chair Neil Barr says the trust will continue to exist in some format and will examine how it can further support Rodney’s business communities.

“We’re particularly keen to establish a forum of Rodney’s top business brains that can provide an insight into the area and lateral thinking about the local economy,” says Mr Barr.

Rodney Economic Development Trust’s contact details will remain the same for the immediate future.
