Tsunami marine threat for Auckland lifted
GNS Science has confirmed that the tsunami marine
threat for Auckland has been lifted.
However, people are advised to exercise caution when boating, fishing or swimming off beaches, in harbours, estuaries and around marinas over the next 24-48 hours as tidal surges and swells are still possible.
The tsunami threat arose after the recent earthquake in Japan and it has resulted in larger than normal swells and fast-running currents in the Auckland region during the day.
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Tonga at 14.19 NZT today has not generated tsunami waves.
Clive Manley, Auckland Civil Defence Controller, wishes to thank everyone for their cooperation today.
