The much-loved Basin is to become the Hawkins Basin Reserve with the new branding in place ahead of Stephen Fleming’s Twenty20 Fill the Basin for Christchurch earthquake appeal match on Sunday.

In announcing the naming right, the chairman of the Basin Reserve Trust, Mr Doug Catley said Hawkins Construction was an ideal partner and would be an enormous help in the refurbishment and upgrade schedules over the years ahead.

“The Hawkins Basin Reserve is a council-owned asset and having Hawkins Construction as a sponsor takes some pressure off the financial contributions from ratepayers via the Wellington City Council,” Mr Catley said.

Hawkins Construction’s Wellington Regional Manager Matt Wilton said the Basin was a much-loved Wellington and New Zealand cricketing ground and is arguably the most famous and historic sporting ground in the country.

“We want to ensure the Basin Reserve is maintained to the highest possible standard to ensure it gets the ongoing respect that it deserves,” Mr Wilton said. “We are keen to see the amenity for both the cricketers and the public improved.

“As a company with six and half decades of history, Hawkins Construction understands and respects the historical status of the ground and we hope to make a positive contribution to its future ensure the legacy remains for the next generation of cricketers and the public,” he said.

Mr Catley said the naming right is for three years with a further right of renewal. The financial details around the sponsorship will remain confidential.
