Christchurch evacuees should register with Red Cross
Many thousands of people have left Christchurch since the tragic earthquake struck that city on Tuesday 22 February. It’s important that those who have left register with Red Cross, even if they only plan to be away for a few days, and also if they have changed location since they first registered with Red Cross, Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Chairperson Jenny Rowan said.
“Over 10,000 people are currently registered with Red Cross as being affected by the Christchurch quake. But one thing that is certain is that there will be many who haven’t registered or who have moved somewhere else since they first registered and haven’t contacted Red Cross to update their information,” Jenny Rowan said.
“Registering with Red Cross is important for a number of reasons. It helps to link families and friends. It helps emergency services in Christchurch determine who may still be missing. It also helps government agencies know where to direct support services and financial assistance.
“People who have evacuated from Christchurch who need to make contact with Red Cross can do so by calling 0800 REDCROSS (0800 733 276). They can also contact their local city or district council, if that is more convenient for them,” Jenny Rowan said.
