Medibank moves to help after Christchurch earthquake
Medibank Group has announced that it is donating $NZ100,000 to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, whilst Medibank Health Solutions New Zealand, the provider of Healthline, is giving urgent assistance to affected residents through its health services.
Lesley Clarke, Executive General Manager of Medibank Health Solutions New Zealand, said, “Our thoughts are with the people of Christchurch following this devastating event.
“We are working with the Ministry of Health to do what we can to assist those who have been impacted. We hope that through our donations and services, we can help those in Christchurch to take the necessary steps to come through this tragedy.”
Ms Clarke continued, “In addition to donating to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, Medibank staff from both New Zealand and Australia are donating directly to registered earthquake charities and we are matching their donations for every dollar. I have been proud of the generosity and commitment of Medibank staff to help others in their time of need.”
In terms of other assistance, Medibank Health Solutions is providing help directly to those affected through its telephone initiative Healthline, which gives callers 24 hour access to health advice from registered nurses. During this difficult period, distressed and anxious callers will also be able to receive support and counselling from mental health professionals. This free service can be accessed by calling 0800 611 116. Further to this, Medibank is helping to manage demand on other services around the country as resources are focused on Christchurch .
The $NZ100,000 donation is being provided through the Medibank Community Fund in Australia and New Zealand , a new initiative which has been established to support programs that enable and encourage people to live longer and in good health. With the establishment of this fund, one percent of Medibank Group’s pre-tax profits will be dedicated to supporting initiatives that encourage people of all ages to stay mentally and physically active.
As with other companies in New Zealand , a number of Medibank Health Solutions staff have been directly affected by the earthquake. Medibank is committed to supporting all earthquake victims during this difficult time and working towards helping New Zealanders get back on their feet.
