Evacuation in the Redcliffs - Clifton area:
Community meeting at 5.00pm
Approximately 200 households have now been evacuated in the Redcliffs - Clifton area near Sumner.
These properties are mostly located below Clifton Terrace and include Kinsey Terrace, Tuawera Terrace to the bottom of Clifton Terrace, Moncks Bay Lane, Emily Lane to Cliff Street, Main Road to Nayland Street, Clifton Road, Aranoni Track, Mulligans Track, points south of Zigzag, and Hurst Seager Lane.
A welfare centre has been established at the old Sumner School in Wiggins Street.
Police and other agencies are liaising with engineers and receiving regular updates from Geo Technicians who advise the evacuation is precautionary. Initial indications are that there has not been significant movement in the cracks.
Police and Army personnel are currently going door to door on streets above Clifton Terrace to advise residents they should be prepared to evacuate should the need arise.
For any assistance or information, residents should go to the Old Sumner School.
A community meeting will be held at 5.00pm this afternoon at the old Sumner School in Wiggins Street. The meeting will be addressed by Inspector Malcolm Johnston, Southern Canterbury Area Commander.
