Christchurch earthquake – update 4
Monday 28 February 2011
Chief Coroner Judge Neil MacLean has re-assured the families of those lost in the Christchurch earthquake that their loved ones are being treated with the respect they deserve and efforts will continue to release them as soon as possible.
Expert teams are working out of Christchurch Hospital and the Burnham Military Camp.
“There is no set timeframe so we are dealing with each individual one by one until there is absolute certainty, we cannot afford to make one mistake.
“The reality is that in almost all cases a visual identification is not possible so we have to employ methods like fingerprinting, DNA and dental records, coupled with other information gathered by Police and reported to the Coroner.
“Families are being kept informed and supported by Police liaison officers and we have enough resources to get this dreadful task done,” Judge MacLean said.
