MP & Mayor invite Nelsonians to memorial service
Nelson MP Nick Smith and Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio are inviting Nelsonians
working in the city and Cantabrians taking refuge in Nelson to join them at
the 1903 Square at Tuesday lunchtime for a brief service of remembrance for
the victims of the Christchurch earthquake and to observe two minutes of
silence together at 12.51pm.
“We should stand together in memory of the awful toll this earthquake has
taken on Christchurch and commit our community to doing all it can to help
Cantabrians rebuild their homes, lives and city,” Nelson MP Nick Smith said.
“Prime Minister John Key has appropriately asked that all New Zealanders
observe two minutes of silence on Tuesday at 12.51pm to mark the quake and
this memorial service is about us coming together as a community to grieve
with Christchurch to all those who have lost their lives,” Mayor Miccio
said.
The memorial service will include prayers, brief speeches of
acknowledgement, the ringing of the cathedral bells and collections for the
newly announced earthquake appeal fund. It will conclude with the two
minutes silence. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at 12.30pm and
wear red and black to slow solidarity with Canterbury.
