Cathedrals Join In Prayer
A service to express support for the people of Christchurch and Canterbury will be held next Tuesday at 12:30pm in Auckland’s Anglican Cathedral. Services will be held at the same time in other Anglican Cathedrals including Wellington, Napier and Taranaki.
The services will take place a week after the earthquake and the time that it struck will be marked. In Wellington Cathedral the service will end at 12:51pm with the tolling of the Cathedral bells and in Auckland there will be silence.
The Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland, the Very Rev’d Jo Kelly-Moore says, ‘The loss of life is tragic and alongside that cathedrals and churches that are so much part of the stories of communities have also been lost. Church communities are responding in their own ways and can combine next Tuesday as a sign of support to Canterbury.’
‘The journey for Christchurch people will be long and so we will gather to express our support and care for them, mindful of what they have endured and what they are preparing to face in the weeks and months ahead,’ says Dean Kelly-Moore.
The services will remember those who have died. Prayers will be offered for those who continue to suffer and those working to care for those in need in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The ecumenical service in Auckland is for all city churches.
