Christchurch earthquake – update 3

Chief Coroner Judge Neil MacLean says his team of experts has continued their efforts to formally identify victims of
the Christchurch earthquake and hopes to release further bodies back to their families in the next few days.
The Coronial response team has been working with pathologists and other experts at temporary mortuaries at Christchurch
Hospital and Burnham Military Camp.
The Chief Coroner met with Police officials in Wellington today and plans to travel to Christchurch next week while
Coronial staff have also held briefings with MFAT and diplomatic representatives.
Judge MacLean also re-iterated that any information that could assist the identification of victims should be given to
Red Cross through their phone line or their on-site staff.
“Every little bit of information helps us to get loved ones back to their families - distinguishing marks and clothing,
where dental records can be obtained, their last known location and photos,” Judge MacLean says.
To assist families a list of funeral directors operating in the Christchurch area has been posted on the Coronial
Services section of the Ministry of Justice website.
