Enough Auckland beds for now thanks!
Aucklanders have unhesitatingly opened their homes to Christchurch evacuees and coordinators now believe they have sufficient offers of accommodation.
The Mayor says since the request went out on Tuesday, more than 1700 people have called 0800 AUCKLAND and offered to host those displaced by the earthquake in their homes.
“Christchurch needs a unified response from New Zealand. This is a phenomenal move of solidarity and support for our fellow Kiwis and visitors to our country. I thank all the willing Aucklanders for their rapid response,” says Len Brown.
“Given the overwhelming number of offers received we’re confident there are now enough hosts on standby to house people over the coming days and weeks.”
The team staffing the 0800 AUCKLAND line will now concentrate their efforts on helping people that need accommodation advice and support.
Auckland Civil Defence is working closely with the i-SITE Visitor Services team of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development to accommodate the Christchurch evacuees.
More than 175 people have been billeted in the homes of Aucklanders, with the bulk of those arriving to the city staying with friends and family or commercial accommodation.
Auckland Council has given $1.5 million to the Canterbury earthquake relief effort, as well as staff resources and expertise. The Mayor urges Aucklanders to show their support by digging deep for the people of Christchurch, and contributing to the appeals.
