The Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples, senior Te Puni Kōkiri staff from Wellington and our Ōtautahi staff are currently meeting at Rehua Marae with Ngai Tahu, Whanau Ora providers, taurahere groups, the Māori Wardens and other Māori groups to discuss a co-ordinated response to Māori and other people who need help following the catastrophic earthquake.

Te Puni Kōkiri also hope to be able to play a role in co-ordinating and facilitating the over whelming response from iwi throughout the motu who want to assist.

“We are aware that many Māori have been offering help. However to begin with we want to establish a base on the ground (possibly at Rehua Marae) and ascertain exactly how we can best help and add value to the work underway. The last thing we want to do is to get in the way of, or detract from the work being done. Early indications from the authorities are that our help would be appreciated,” said Te Puni Kōkiri CEO Leith Comer.
