Earthquake
Update – February 23 2011 – 1.30pm
Civil Defence reminds all Christchurch people to take care of themselves and their neighbours and family during the aftershocks from yesterday’s shallow and devastating earthquake.
As much as possible people need to take care of themselves and their immediate neighbours and families, given the pressure on resources, said Civil Defence Controller Bob Upton.
“Removing silt is not currently a priority for emergency services and rescue teams. The people closest to you will provide the best support.”
Water is a serious concern and we strongly advise people to conserve water so don’t shower, take baths, or flush your loo.
If it rains, please collect water in buckets. Continue to boil water. Save all your water for drinking.
Stopbank Update
A preliminary inspection of stopbanks North of Christchurch was carried out yesterday and today be Environment Canterbury engineers. There are no concerns with stopbanks bordering the Ashley river. There is damage to Kaiapoi and Waimakariri stopbanks but less than the September 4 earthquake.
“Engineers expect the Waimakariri system to handle a flood of about 2,500 cumecs (cubic metres of water per second). Teams of contractors are working to prepare damage,” said Environment Canterbury Regional Engineer Ross Vesey.
