Auckland responds to national emergency declaration

Mayor Len Brown says Auckland will continue to provide whatever support is required for the Christchurch earthquake recovery effort.

“More than 100 Aucklanders are today on their way to Christchurch to provide specialist support.

“The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Coordination Centre is working directly with Wellington to deliver our support,” says Len Brown.

A National State of Emergency is being declared by the Minister of Civil Defence this afternoon. This declaration means the country has a central point for the coordination of all emergency management, health and welfare efforts.

Auckland’s civil defence emergency management group will work directly with the national controller on allocating resources from the Auckland region.

The most likely resources to be requested are:

• Technical experts such as building inspectors and engineers
• Staff trained in emergency management to work in the Christchurch Emergency Coordination Centre
• Welfare personnel to work in Christchurch
• Logistics support in managing international aid arriving into New Zealand via Auckland Airport
• Planning the accommodation needs for potential evacuees to Auckland.
