Arrests follow armed incident in Morrinsville

Three men are currently being interviewed by Police following an armed incident between Morrinsville and Matamata late this morning.

Detective Sergeant Rod Carpinter of the Morrinsville Police said officers were called to an address in Morrinsville about 10.45am after a call from the occupants stating three men had entered the property, threatening them with a firearm.

"We understand one person in the home was struck with the firearm before the offenders fled in a red Commodore in the direction of Matamata.

"A responding patrol car has sighted the offenders' car and turned around to pursue it however by the time the officer managed to turn his vehicle around such was their speed the offenders were lost from view."

Mr Carpinter said the offenders have headed down Landsdowne Rd and other officers have set up road spikes at the intersection of Gunn and Peria Roads.

"The offenders have seen the road spikes and attempted to avoid them by swerving on to the grass verge, in doing so they have struck a power-pole bringing it down and coming to a halt with the live wires lying over their vehicle.

No-one was injured in the crash.

"Power company workers were called as well as members of the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad and the Police Dog Section. Working in conjunction with the power workers the three occupants of the car were extracted from the car and arrested."

Mr Carpinter said a search of the car is currently underway and so far a quantity of ammunition and drugs had been recovered.
