LPG at home: are you over the limit?
New limits on how much LPG can be stored in homes have been set by the Environmental Risk Management Authority.
“LPG is a highly flammable gas that burns explosively in the event of a leak and ignition,” says ERMA New Zealand Hazardous Substances Compliance Manager Dr Simon Buckland.
“Imposing limits on the quantities stored indoors will reduce the risk to people and property should the gas accidentally ignite.”
The rules limit the amount of LPG that can be stored in a detached house and an attached house up to three storeys to 2 x 10 kilogram cylinders. Apartments and houses over three storeys must hold no more than 10 kg per dwelling.
The new limits clarify the existing rules around LPG indoors, and apply regardless of whether the LPG is being used or stored.
They come into effect on 2 March, 2011.
The most common type of cylinder used at home holds 9 kg of LPG, and is typically used on appliances such as space heaters, patio heaters and barbecues.
New limits have also been set for factories and warehouses as well as public buildings, such as halls, places of worship, hotels, bars, restaurants, shops and offices.
