Honda on the Podium at the GPs

Honda on the Podium at the GPs

Last weekend (Feb 12/13) saw the Castrol Power 1 New Zealand Superbike Championships, moving to Ruapuna raceway, just outside Christchurch for round three and the New Zealand Grand Prixs.

Again the weather played a significant part in the results, but the rain was not as heavy as that which resulted in the cancellation of round two at Teretonga the previous weekend.

New Plymouth’s Hayden Fitzgerald moved to third on the Superbike Championship points table on his Castrol Honda CBR1000RR, after taking a well deserved second to Andrew Stroud in the weather affected New Zealand Superbike Grand Prix.

Tyre choice was the controlling factor, as light rain fell. Stroud and Fitzgerald started on slick tyres while the likes of Australian Robbie Bugden chose full wet tyres. When the rain didn’t become heavier, field positions changed dramatically, with Stroud pulling away from the field. Slowly but surely Fitzgerald pulled him back finishing just .215 secs adrift.

Honda’s were also on the podium in the 600 SuperSport Grand Prix with Taupo’s Scott Moir finishing third, while Invercargill’s Jeremy Holmes came in fourth on his Southland Honda CBR600RR.

While in the smallest class teammates Rangiora’s Jake Lewis and Orewa’s Avalon Biddle brought their Honda RS125s home 1-2 in the 125cc Grand Prix
