Over 6,000kg of waste from Raggamuffin to be recycled
ROTORUA 10.02.11: A major recycling programme at the weekend’s Raggamuffin Music Festival has been hailed a success by Rotorua District Council (RDC).
Over 13,730kg of waste was removed from Rotorua International Stadium after Saturday’s festival, with fifty percent of the total being diverted from the landfill to be recycled.
Mijo Katavic, business manager for the council’s Castlecorp business unit, says a total of 6,490kg was recycled, made up of 3,930kg glass, 2,060kg co-mingled recyclables and 500kg cardboard.
"In the past all of this waste would have ended up in the landfill. While a large proportion of waste was collected in the following two days after the event, we acknowledge the effort of concert-goers for using recycling bins and contributing to this fantastic result.”
RDC procurement & sustainability manager Kerry Starling says the Raggamuffin recycling programme is part of a wider council strategy around minimising the amount of waste that goes into landfills and maximising material to be recycled and re-used.
“I congratulate those who attended and organised Raggamuffin for embracing recycling and Castlecorp for their efforts in managing the process.”
