Man killed in boating accident near Rangiwai Island

An elderly man is dead after a 5.6 metre runabout struck a channel marker near Rangiwai Island in the Tauranga Harbour just before 2.00pm this afternoon.

The deceased, one of two people on board, was a passenger on the boat when it struck the marker. The man's identity is not being released at the moment as his next of kin are yet to be notified.

The other person, also an elderly man, was taken to Tauranga Hospital with severe facial injuries. It is understood these injuries are not life threatening.

Police are working with Maritime New Zealand to determine the exact cause of the crash but it appears the boat struck the channel marker while making a turn.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact the Tauranga Police Station on 07 5774300.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Please be aware local iwi have placed a Rahui on Tauranga Harbour for 3 days.
