Society Awards Scholarship to Aspiring Scientist
Whangarei A&P Society has announced it has awarded its annual agricultural scholarship to 18 year old Pukekohe resident, Rhiannon Handcock.
Rhiannon’s ambition to serve the agricultural industry in the future through science and research encapsulated the judges’ enthusiasm for her application and Rhiannon was award a $7,500 scholarship ($2,500 each year over three years) to assist with her study costs at Massey University.
Although initially a ‘city girl’, Rhiannon’s love for the country and agriculture began when her family relocated from Auckland to Pukekohe when she was eleven. Rhiannon quickly became involved in the rural lifestyle and participated in School Calf Club both as a Steward then as a Judge. She also began showing Jersey Cattle at A&P Shows in the region. Rhiannon has been milking her cows prior to leaving for secondary school each day and has also bred and raised a handful of calves.
Rhiannon’s strong interest in science – particularly Biology – will stand her in good stead in her chosen career path.
“I compete at A&P Shows whenever I can and spending time with other farmers helped me to decide I also wanted a career in agriculture. Their experience and obvious enjoyment of the industry helped me make that choice and I have already learnt so much from them,” Ms Handcock said.
“I plan to work hard to ensure that Whangarei A&P Society chose the right person for this Award. I want to be in a career where I can make a difference. I believe that agriculture is always changing and I want to be someone who contributes to that change.”
Executive Director for the Society, Mr Malcolm McKerrow, advises the purpose of the Scholarship is to assist young people to further their education and training at any agricultural institution.
“The agricultural industry should not be out of reach for those who have lived an urban life. Agriculture offers a very rewarding lifestyle as others already in the industry will testify. Our Society is pleased to be able to offer Rhiannon this opportunity and we look forward to following her progress,” Mr McKerrow said.
The Whangarei A&P Society Scholarship is open to all young people contemplating or participating in agricultural based studies. Applications are available from the Society, with judging taking place in November each year.
