ANZAC of the Year Award - Call For Nominations
Nominations to find New Zealand's Anzac of the Year are now open.
The Award honours a New Zealander, or New Zealanders, who has best
displayed the qualities of comradeship, compassion, courage, and
commitment.
Established by the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association
in 2010, the Anzac of the Year Award recognises New Zealanders that
continue to embody the Anzac spirit exemplified in the 1915 story of New
Zealand Gallipoli hero Private Richard Henderson. The 19-year-old
Henderson with his donkey repeatedly brought in wounded soldiers under
heavy fire and with total disregard for his own safety.
The Anzac of the Year Award is a bronze statuette of Richard Henderson
and his donkey at Gallipoli. The recipient also receives a framed bronze
medallion.
The Award may be made for a single act or for significant service to New
Zealanders or the international community.
Open to all New Zealanders nominees must have exhibited the four
qualities of comradeship, compassion, courage, and commitment beyond the
call of duty.
Nominations close 28 February 2011 with the 2011 Anzac of the Year to be
announced in April.
