Cyclone Yasi: North Queensland – MFAT Media Update

12.30 pm - 3 February 2011

Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi made landfall south at Mission Beach, south of Cairns just before 2 am (NZT). The Cyclone, now a Category 2, is continuing to move inland in a southwesterly direction

Advice for New Zealanders in North Queensland

• New Zealanders in Queensland are advised to follow any instructions and advice issued by the Australian authorities.
• Visit Queensland's Disaster Management Services website http://www.disaster.qld.gov.au/ for further information
• Queensland Police and the Red Cross have set up hotlines for those seeking to register their whereabouts after relocation or evacuation, or to assist those who are trying to locate people evacuated or relocated:

• New Zealanders in the affected areas should also keep family informed of their safety and wellbeing and register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade www.safetravel.govt.nz
• New Zealanders intending to travel to Queensland should check their flight status with their airline or travel agent directly.

• Currently no reports of loss of life or serious injury
