Lumsden Gallery to Host up And Coming Wildlife Photographer
A Weekend residency at Fusion gallery and Studio in Lumsden February 5th and 6th is to be Wildlife Photographer Ross
Curtis’s first step on the biggest journey of his life as he embarks on a professional photography career.
Curtis officially resigned from his position with the Department of Conservation in 2010 to focus all of his attention
on his craft as he pursues becoming more of a well-known and respected Wildlife photographer. Curtis credits Art Wolfe
as his main influence.
“His images are incredible in capturing wildlife living within their natural environment, illustrating the involvement
they have in their day-to-day habits or struggle for survival. Portraying an animal or tranquil scene, untouched in the
wild is what inspires me”.
On agreeing to take part in Fusion’s pilot residency programme Curtis said “I feel this opportunity to be an artist in
residence provides a real chance for exposure as a photographic artist. This may be an avenue in which to pursue a
career, and to be honest, one I hadn’t initially considered until meeting the team at Fusion Gallery and Studio in
2010”.
Gallery co ordinator Michelle Wallis says “We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to Ross as a
photographer, he has taken some amazing photos and we are impressed with his dedication to his craft, we believe in his
ability as a photographer and we hope that this first step is one in a very long and successful career”.
Future plans for Curtis include visiting as many locations throughout New Zealand as possible to photograph some of the
best landscapes it has to offer, also to capture the wealth of wildlife both inland and coastal as he travels. He also
hopes to revisit any offshore islands including Antarctica and capture some of the last remaining true wilderness areas
we have left.
Curtis plans to be editing and processing digital files from his latest photographic excursion from visiting Doughboy
and Mason Bay (Stewart Island) while in studio February 5th 10 – 3 and 6th 11 – 2, he welcomes interaction from the
public.
