Six school leavers awarded Solid Energy tertiary scholarships

Six students – three from Southland, two from Waikato and one from the West Coast – have been awarded Solid Energy tertiary scholarships to assist with the cost of their higher education.

Worth up to $8,000 ($2,000 a year for up to four years’ study), the scholarships are available to senior high school students from Solid Energy’s mining communities. The scholarship recipients are:

Southland: Central Southland College’s Christopher Thomson, who will study commerce and law at the University of Canterbury (UC); and Stuart Kruger (Southland Boys High School) and Charles More (Verdon College), both of whom will study engineering at UC.

Waikato: Hamilton Boys High School student Simran Singh intends to study engineering in either Waikato or Auckland and his schoolmate, Matthew Burt, will enroll at the University of Otago to study surveying.

West Coast: Jaz Hamilton of Greymouth High School intends to concentrate on environmental sciences while completing a geology degree at UC.

A complete list of scholarship criteria can be found at www.coalnz.com.
