Fundraising Efforts Benefit Pike River Miners' Families
The sale of P&O Cruises navigational charts in December, along with onboard donations, has raised more than NZ$6500 for the Pike River Miners’ Relief Fund Trust.
The navigational charts, used by the Captain and deck officers during cruises throughout December on the fleet's four ships Pacific Pearl, Pacific Dawn, Pacific Jewel and Pacific Sun, were auctioned to passengers at the end of every cruise. This money is traditionally given to charity and during December, all funds raised from the chart sales went to the Pike River Miners’ Relief Fund Trust.
Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises says "The end-of-cruise charity auction is always a popular feature of our cruises and it is fantastic that passengers really dug deep in their pockets throughout December for this worthy cause."
The auctions included the navigational charts from the maiden voyage of P&O Cruises’ latest addition to its fleet Pacific Pearl and its December 22 cruise to Noumea and its islands.
A further NZ$17,000 was also raised by P&O Cruises through fundraising at the Pacific Pearl official naming ceremony and public party, which was held at Queens Wharf last month. These funds went to Variety – The Children’s Charity in its appeal to help the children of the men who lost their lives in the Pike River Mine Disaster.
