Lions Helping Their Aussie Cousins with Cash for Flood Victims
New Zealand Lions Clubs will be donating money to their Australian counterparts, who will distribute the money directly to flood victims.
The chairman of Lions NZ, Robin Nairn from Hawke’s Bay, was in Australia as the impacts of the flooding unfolded and said his offer of Kiwi financial support was very welcome. Lions have been part of the army of volunteers in Queensland who have been helping with the cleanup.
“The Australians came to our help with the Canterbury earthquake and it’s our turn to reciprocate,” Mr Nairn said. “The devastation is enormous and it is going to be weeks or months before some of these people can return to homes that are still intact.
Mr Nairn said New Zealand clubs had given very generously in raising $170,000 for the Melbourne bushfire victims in 2009 and Lions were proud that every dollar offered would go to a flood victim, without anything being taken off the top for administration.
Mr Nairn said if the public wanted to make a donation, they could contact a Lions Club member in their local community.
