Offender Charged
PRESS RELEASE:
On sat 15/01/11 Kaikohe Police went to an address on Mangakahia Road to speak to a male who had breached his bail earlier in the night. The 28yr old male was arrested for breaching his bail which consisted of a 24hr curfew, a not to consume alcohol and must present himself at the door clause.
The male asked if he could get
some more clothes and as he walked back into his house he
grabbed a butcher’s knife from the kitchen.
A brief
struggle with the arresting constable took place and during
the struggle the offender received a wound to his chest
area.
The offender then continued to threaten and challenge Police lunging at them from the floor with the knife.
The offender has then grabbed his partner and threatened to stab his partner if Police did not leave his property. Police were forced to retreat outside the house but managed to contain the offender in the house where they deployed a taser. This had immediate effect forcing the offender to release his partner who was removed from the house.
The offender then barricaded himself in the building threating to blow himself and anyone else standing nearby using a LPG gas bottle.
The Northland AOS squad was deployed and Police attempted to negotiate with the offender for approximately 4 hours, however the offender refused to co-operate.
Police eventually forced entry and restrained the offender with the use of another taser after the offender was located with the knife still held to his throat and the LPG gas bottle lying next to him.
He was treated by ambulance staff before being taken to BOI hospital for treatment to his chest wound as a result of stabbing himself.
The 28yr old Forestry worker was arrested and remanded in custody when he appeared in court today.

offender has been charged with
• Threatening to
kill/do GBH x 2 (1 x Police and his partner)
•
Aggravated Assault
• Resisting Police
The offender’s 38yr old partner was also arrested and charged with obstructing Police.
