Auckland offers support to flood-ravaged sister city

12 January 2011

Auckland offers support to flood-ravaged sister city The Mayor has offered any assistance Auckland can provide to our sister city Brisbane, as it copes with the floods affecting south east Queensland.

Len Brown sent a message of support to Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman this afternoon.

Three Aucklanders are already among 15 New Zealanders helping with the clean up efforts in the flood-ravaged state.

"The latest information from Queensland is that they have all the resources they need to manage the situation but we will continue to keep in touch as it progresses," says Len Brown.

The floods are expected to peak in Brisbane tomorrow.

Auckland Council trains and provides equipment to volunteer Civil Defence Response teams in Auckland.

Three of these trained personnel, including an Auckland Council employee, are among the New Zealand volunteers already in Queensland. The Auckland Council employee is Jonathan Lowe, a swimming pool inspector in the council's compliance and enforcement team. Jonathan is a volunteer member of the North Shore's response team, which has roles in and around civil defence and emergency management. He was also part of the team that Auckland Council sent to Christchurch to help after last year's earthquake.
