NZHPT extends earthquake donation campaign

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) has extended its donations appeal to assist Cantabrians affected by last September’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks.

With a regular fundraising programme to support its own heritage work, the NZHPT committed to contribute all donations it received from October through until 31 December last year to the Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Buildings Fund. More than $88,000 has been received in that time, mostly from NZHPT members. More donations have been received following the sharp, 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch on Boxing Day which caused further damage to buildings and homes in the region.

“We’re hoping that the rest of New Zealand will join in and show their support for our heritage,” said Nicola Jackson, NZHPT’s acting Chief Executive.

Ms Jackson said all the money would be passed over to the Fund following the campaign’s new close-off date of 31 January. The amount will be matched dollar for dollar by Government.

“It has been heart warming to see the generosity of so many people that have already donated to the appeal and sent some touching messages as well. The earthquake has not only affected the people of Canterbury but nationally as well – and that has been reflected in the donations still coming in.

“While some of us might not own heritage buildings we certainly appreciate them - they are very much a part of what we identify with in our own community and when we visit historically-rich Canterbury. It’s an opportunity to support those owners and families that face many unsettled months as they look to rebuild not only their homes but their lives as well.”

The NZHPT agreed to contribute $250,000 to the Fund in the days following September’s earthquake to help retain Canterbury’s heritage landmarks.

“It would be wonderful to exceed $100,000 from donations to add to our earlier contribution, and we’re not that far off.”
