Bianchi Ruapehu Cycle Classic 2011
Back for its fifth year, the Bianchi Ruapehu Cycle Classic 2011 will be bigger and better than ever. Now incorporating not one but three days of cycling fun in the Central Plateau, this popular event will run from Friday 11th February through to Sunday 13th February 2011.
As well as the traditional 160km Bianchi Ruapehu Cycle Classic, competitors can now also challenge themselves to the TCB Criterium on Friday evening and the 17km Kune Climb on Sunday. "Tour results" and prizes will be awarded at the prizegiving on Sunday 13th February. To be eligible, competitors must have entered and completed all three events.
The TCB Criterium event is a circuit course and will feature three grades: A grade – 20 mins + 3 laps / B grade – 15 mins + 3 laps / C grade – 10 mins + 3 laps.
The Bianchi Ruapehu Cycle Classic event, open to both Individuals and Team categories, has been described as 160km of pure pleasure! This is a challenging but fun ride. Starting at the alpine village of Ohakune, the 160km course takes in the spectacular scenery of the Central Plateau and the Desert Road with Mt Ruapehu a constant companion as the riders circle the Tongariro National Park.
The Kune Climb, on Day Three, is a grueling 17 kilometre road climb from the base of the Ohakune Mountain road to the car park of Turoa ski field.
Starting at an altitude of 597 metres above sea level and climbing through some of New Zealand’s most majestic scenery, making for a tough 17 kilometres and not for the faint hearted. The finish line is situated in the fresh mountain air at an altitude of 1675 metres.
The Kune Climber will be open to both individuals and teams.
