Fatal Accident At Papakowhai Reserve
Councillors and staff of Porirua City Council are saddened by the tragic death of a young girl following a cycling accident in Papakowhai Reserve yesterday.
The 10 year girl, visiting from Hamilton , was cycling along a walkway off Cromarty Place when the accident occurred.
"There are no words that can adequately comfort a family at a time like this but our thoughts and prayers are with them," says Mayor Nick Leggett. "We will do anything we can to assist with the investigation of this tragic accident."
The walkway has concrete paving in good condition and passes through a bush covered hillside. It is widely used by locals to access Papakowhai School . The accident has happened at the junction where the concrete path intersects with a set of about 15 wooden railed steps.
The matter is being referred to the Coroner and Council staff will provide information relating to the construction and maintenance of the walkway and the structures on it.
