No New Year’s Eve fireworks in Wellington
There will not be a public fireworks display in Wellington to usher in 2011 this evening.
A media report earlier today said there would be fireworks on the waterfront. This was wrong. There have been no official New Year’s Eve fireworks since 2000.
Wellington City Council’s New Year celebrations involves three gatherings – stages will be set up on the Te Papa forecourt, the pyramid at the City to Sea bridge and by the Frank Kitts Park lagoon – where buskers and musicians will perform from 9pm and revellers can count down to welcome in the New Year.
Clocks will be projected onto the outside of Te Papa and the Michael Fowler Centre building.
There will be family entertainment from 8.30pm on the Te Papa forecourt with a countdown for children at 9pm.
