Building inspections throughout the Central City continue
Council staff and the Urban Search and Rescue teams continue their inspections of buildings damaged in the recent aftershocks.
More than 3000 buildings of the 5000 buildings within the four avenues have been inspected and inspections will continue until nightfall. Of those inspected so far, 115 will require remedial work.
Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button says the balance of the buildings not seen today will be inspected tomorrow.
Efforts will also continue to re-open the area of Cashel Street between Colombo Street and Oxford Terrace to foot traffic.
“We are grateful to business owners who have taken the initiative and begun assessments and are planning the remedial process This will speed up the recovery of the area,’’ says Deputy Mayor Button.
Council will update the media as information comes to hand tomorrow. There will be no media briefing.
