Teenagers charged with more serious offences

Teenagers charged with more serious offences following assault on Hamilton offficer

Two teenagers who allegedly attacked a policeman with weapons after officers were called to their Hamilton home following reports of a domestic dispute yesterday afternoon will be facing serious charges when they appear in court today.

Hamilton City Area Commander, Inspector Rob Lindsay, said both the 14 and 16-year-olds have been charged with attempted murder following interviews with detectives this morning.

"Obviously with the matter before the courts we can't go into any specific details of what has occurred but the charges in my view reflect the severity of what has occurred.

"During last night's incident the full range of tactical options were available and officers at the scene had to use batons, pepper spray and a taser before being able to affect an arrest."

Mr Lindsay said the officer who was assaulted was a seasoned officer who utilised good management while dealing with the situation.

"This matter could have had far more serious consequences had those right decisions not been made."
