While a nation mourns for a 9 year old West Auckland girl, TV 3 screens and then laughs at a child abuse skit.
An Auckland Family Counsellor is appalled at the actions of the TV 3 Nightline programme, who featured a internet-based
comedy skit in which a 6 year old child and a father are depicted joking about the sexual abuse of the child, on
23/12/10.
Steve Taylor, Director of 24-7 Ltd, is calling for an immediate public apology from TV 3 for showing such crass poor
taste in running the item: “We are right in the middle of a national focus on a 9 year old West Auckland girl who was allegedly horribly abused and
sexually assaulted by her family, and a TV 3 Producer thinks it is a good idea to run an item making fun of the topic,
including having the father verbally abuse the child – the breathtaking stupidity and insensitivity of this decision
must surely result in some form of formal disciplinary action” says Mr Taylor.
“We are already a nation beset by an awful and ongoing record of child abuse, so it is simply unwise and foolhardy to
make light of such a serious issue. TV 3 have made a gross error of judgement” says Mr Taylor.
