Don't forget the helmet

If Santa delivers bikes on Christmas Day, don't forget the helmet
If Santa is delivering bikes to your kids on Christmas Day, parents are urged to pop a helmet and reflective clothing under the tree too.
Wellington Police District Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter Baird says it's really important that children getting new bikes for Christmas always have a helmet which fits them properly, as well as a level of competency.
"Before you take your children out on the roads to ride their new bikes, make sure they know the basics beforehand. Go riding together as a family wherever possible and avoid really busy roads and intersections until they've gained their confidence and skills."
He says that confidence and the ability to anticipate dangerous situations is critical. The cyclist is still the vulnerable road user and they need to take extra care, particularly children, when out bike riding. A reflective jacket or backpack is recommended as well as correct lighting.
"In 2009, there were reported 136 crashes between a cyclist and a motorist in the region, but studies suggest that the crash rate that does not involve a motorist is double this figure."
"Cycling is a great recreation activity for people of all ages. We have had an increase in cyclists in the region but regretfully an increase in crashes too. Knowing the basics when it comes to safety will make cycling more enjoyable and safer."
