InternetNZ to hold name suppression workshop

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is convening a free public workshop in February 2011 to examine the vexed issue of
name suppression in the digital age.
The workshop will focus specifically on a section in the Criminal Procedure (Reform and Modernisation) Bill that creates
a new offence for ISPs who host material that breaches suppression orders.
An ISP is defined in the Bill as anyone who enables transfer of digital material or who hosts material online, so this
has the potential to catch a huge number of people.
The workshop will also explore the idea of a national register of suppression orders.
A high-profile speaker line-up has been assembled, with representatives from the legal, media and Internet communities.
Confirmed speakers include Law Commissioner Dr Warren Young, ICT lawyer Rick Shera, Fairfax Media’s Sinead Boucher and
Blogger David Farrar.
The workshop is being held on the afternoon of Thursday 3 February 2011 at the Civic Suites, Wellington Town Hall.
InternetNZ encourages all those with an interest in name suppression or in the interactions between the Law and the
Internet to attend.
