Monte Cecilia Breakthrough

Monte Cecilia Breakthrough

“After over a year of angst and division there are good signs that the ongoing saga of Monte Cecilia school can be resolved in a more positive way”, says Roskill Community Voice Member of the Puketapapa Local Board Michael Wood, after the Board voted in favour of seeking a discussion with the Council governing body about the project.

“We have made Monte Cecilia our priority issue and we are pleased that we have made progress at the first business meeting of the Board. The current plan to forcibly evict, demolish, and re-build Monte Cecilia school has caused huge division in the community and will cost ratepayers tens of millions of dollars. We have always believed that a sensible and open-minded discussion can lead to a better and more cost-effective solution”, says Wood.

“Importantly, the motion that has been passed by the Board was achieved with cross-party support. The original motion put up by Roskill Community Voice was amended after discussion with our C&R colleagues and seeks a full discussion with the governing body including a look at the alternatives, and the impact on other open space projects. While the motion does not achieve everything we would like, it is an important start in opening up a discussion that to date has been behind closed doors”

“We now look forward to some fruitful discussions between the Board, the governing body, and the key stakeholders to work through the issue in a constructive fashion. We are confident that a better, more cost-effective solution can be found”, concludes Wood.
