Wellington Police gear up for Operation Unite
Police throughout the Wellington district are hoping festive season-goers enjoy their weekend but are warning that they
need to be responsible when it comes to alcohol.
Police are partnering with health professionals and community organisations around New Zealand and Australia in support
of Operation Unite, which aims to reduce alcohol harm.
Commander for the Wellington District Operation Unite Inspector Graham Cowle says, "We want people to have a good time
this weekend whilst they're celebrating the festive season and end of year functions, but we will be out there too,
taking a proactive approach to ensuring that people are being responsible with alcohol."
Inspector Cowle says Police from the Wairarapa, Hutt Valley, Wellington City and Kapiti Mana will be patrolling public
places, whilst road policing staff will be out in force throughout the District in an effort to reduce alcohol-related
crashes.
Police will be supported this weekend by the likes of Maori Wardens, Community Patrol groups, Walkwise staff and health
professionals.
"The negative impacts of alcohol are well known. We want people to keep themselves and their mates safe when out and
about this weekend, to ensure everyone makes it home safely at the end of their night."
