All Systems Go For New Year’s Eve
It will be a party to remember as plans gear up for the Aurora Energy New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Queenstown and Wanaka, Queenstown Lakes District Council arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said.
“New Year’s Eve is a great time for locals and visitors to come together and celebrate,” said Mrs Maxwell. ”We’ve put together a feast of free music, entertainment and fireworks, making sure everyone will have a memorable night as they say goodbye to 2010 and celebrate the arrival of 2011.”
The event also marks the official start of Summerdaze, the district’s annual summer festival.
“I can’t imagine a better opening,” said Mrs Maxwell. “The Aurora Energy New Year’s Eve celebrations will really set the standard for Summerdaze as a whole.”
The New Year’s Eve celebration in Queenstown kicks off at 7.30pm on Friday 31 December, with two stages in action throughout the night. Wakatipu High School band The Fletcherz will open the Earnslaw Park stage, followed by glamorous local girl group, The Sequin Sisters.
Then it’s the turn of covers band Mojo to get everyone up and dancing before the fireworks provide the traditional big finish. The Marine Parade stage will be offering a more ‘club-like’ sound with DJ Asbro, Hand Solo and special guests.
Wanaka’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations begin an hour later at 8.30pm with reggae and home grown covers band Jah Fire. It’s followed by Auckland group Mile High, which will take things up to midnight when the fireworks head skyward.
Once the fireworks are over, both Celebrations will continue with music through until 1am.
Mrs Maxwell said she’s expecting this New Year to be the best one yet and she’s hoping the weather will play its part.
“There’s a long, hot summer forecast so it’s fingers crossed for a warm, fine New Year’s Eve,” she said.
Alec Findlater of event sponsors, Aurora Energy said the company was delighted to renew its association with the celebrations.
“Aurora is pleased to continue its long-standing association with the Queenstown Lakes District community through its involvement in the Summerdaze festival, “he said. “The New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Queenstown and Wanaka will be spectacular events and Aurora is proud to be sponsoring them.”
