Injured Waiouru officer appreciates support

Seriously injured Waiouru Highway Patrol Officer Bruce Mellor is overwhelmed by the many kind messages he's receiving from concerned colleagues and members of the public.

Colleagues say that Bruce, who remains in a serious but stable condition in Palmerston North Hospital, is not someone who likes a fuss but he's very appreciative of the care and concern shown by so many people.

Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann, Central Police District, said that Bruce is progressing as well as can be expected given the significant head and facial injuries he received in the attack which happened after a routine roadside stop north of Taihape on Saturday morning.

Two teenagers, one aged 14 years and one aged 18 years, appeared in the Whanganui Court today on charges relating to the attack. Both have name suppression and have been remanded in custody until 22 December, the 14-year-old in Child, Youth and Family care.

Investigations into the circumstances of the attack are continuing and further charges will be considered.

"Bruce is getting the best possible medical and nursing care," Detective Inspector Bensemann said. "It's good to see he is on the mend although further surgery can't be ruled out at some future point.

"He's a very unassuming officer and hugely respected by the Taihape and Waiouru community where he's been working since transferring in 2004 from Auckland.

"Everyone wishes him well for a successful recovery. To make sure he gets the rest he needs medical staff and police are limiting visitor access at Bruce's request."
