Joint Media release

Auckland’s communities to start talks with new Council at Community Summit

Auckland Council and communities across the region are embracing the opportunity to work together and will begin their collaboration at the ‘Act Local, Work Regional, Work Together’ Summit this week.

The summit is being held at the Telstra Events Centre on Tuesday 14 December from 9.30am-1.30pm and is co-hosted by the Auckland Community Development Alliance (ACDA) and Auckland Council.

The summit is an opportunity for community organisations, councillors, Local Board Chairs, Council Controlled Organisations, central government managers and others to develop plans for how the Auckland Council and its communities can work effectively together to enhance community development and social wellbeing outcomes across Auckland.

“I believe great cities are built on strong communities,” says Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

“This summit is a chance for many of the diverse communities of Auckland to meet and forge relationships. It is the beginning of communities and the council finding new ways to actively work together in partnership to build a strong city.”

“The summit builds on the commitment to the Auckland Community Development Charter and sets the scene for an ongoing collaborative relationship between the whole of Council and regional communities over the next three years, “said ACDA co-spokesperson, Tony Mayow, Chair of Community Waitakere.

The Summit also provides a timely opportunity for both communities and the Mayor and the council to share information, plans and aspirations that communities need to know about, including how they will likely be engaged over 2011.

There will be a media briefing at the conclusion of the summit.
