Lake Wanaka packed calendar of events for the summer season
LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (6 December, 2010) – A full calendar of sporting, family and musical entertainment makes Lake Wanaka the place to visit this summer.
The fun kicks off this weekend with sporting action for the Phyzique Offroad Challenge (11 December), a triathlon or duathlon for all abilities, to be staged in the scenic Dublin Bay area.

Over the festive period locals and visitors can enjoy a mix of musical events from the Christmas carols at the Dinosaur Park to the Lake Hawea Summer Sessions with three outdoor concerts featuring iconic Kiwi bands such as Steriogram, Elemeno P and Hollie Smith. The Aurora New Year’s Eve Celebrations will bring downtown Wanaka abuzz with live music and a dazzling firework display to welcome in 2011.
Early January action includes the Southern Muster (3 January) at the Snow Farm for mountain bikers and runners, the Summerdaze Grand Kite Display (8 January) a spectacular show of kites of all sizes, shapes and formations from the world renowned Peter Lynn team alongside the Wanaka Holiday Gala for family fun with homemade produce and live entertainment.
Mid-January the town fills with athletes from across New Zealand and the world for the Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival presenting kids, sprint, half and full iron distance triathlons. Thousands of spectators will cheer on the athletes and enjoy the electrifying finish line party.
The Kahu Youth’s Little Day Out (24 January) is a full day of fun and entertainment for young people and families with skate and BMX competitions, face painting and bouncy castles. While The BIG EASY (22 January) challenges mountain bikers to a scenic ride from the Snow Farm to Albert Town.
Running throughout summer, the Wanaka Craft Market (every Sunday) for handmade arts direct from the artist and the Wanaka Farmers and Gardeners Market (every Thursday) for quality local produce. Both are on Pembroke Park. Cinema Paradiso takes the big screen outdoors for a series of drive-in movies (throughout January) featuring favourite classic films under the stars.
James Helmore, general manager of Lake Wanaka Tourism welcomes the diverse range of events throughout the summer months, “Summer is a great time for families and friends to relax and enjoy time together whether they are in town for the events or to enjoy Lake Wanaka’s many activities on offer from the kms of walking and hiking tracks to the airborne adventures or the delightful food and wine experiences on offer,” he said.
