See Makara Peak at its peak
An all-day festival will be held this Sunday (5 December) in celebration of Wellington’s premier mountain biking destination – the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park in Karori.
The award-winning 230-hectare park has a variety of trails on offer – suitable for riders ranging from beginners to elite mountain bike riders. The aim of the festival is to increase awareness of what the park has to offer.
Highlights of the day will include free mountain bike tours, a bike skills clinic, guided bush walks, a trail run, planting, trail digging, and the Grand Loop Race! Bikes will be available for hire on the day.
Since 1998 the reserve has been developed by community volunteers, the Makara Peak Supporters. Their vision was to create a world-class mountain bike park, with tracks for all levels of rider, in a restored native ecosystem. Twelve years on, Makara Peak has an international reputation, over 30 kilometres of tracks, and more than 31,000 new native trees.
All tracks within the park, and many surrounding it, have been designed and built by the supporters who also take care of the majority of maintenance work on the tracks.
Wellington City Council and the Makara Peak Supporters group recently won the New Zealand Recreation Association’s (NZRA) 2010 Outstanding Park Award for their collaboration on Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park.
