We’re showing ours... Will you show us yours?
At the YMCA Tauranga it is all about showing your spirit and as the Christmas season hastens its approach, the Y is on a mission to show its Christmas spirit to struggling families.
And in doing so, it is hoping to pass on the spirit of giving to future generations.
Over the last week of the school term, the YMCA will be collecting non-perishable food items and new toys at its eight After School Care centres and head office. It will then hand over all the donations to the Tauranga Food Bank.
“Christmas can be a very joyous time of year”, says YMCA After School Care Coordinator Tamati Cameron. “But for some it can be a real struggle. The YMCA would like to do its bit to help those having a hard time by donating food items and toys that will hopefully make a difference.”
In taking collections at its After School Care locations, the YMCA will be taking the time to explain to children the importance of giving during the festive season.
“Caring is one of the core values of the YMCA,” notes Tamati. “One of the best ways we can teach it is by illustrating how to do it ourselves. By taking a little less and giving a little more, hopefully we’ll be showing the kids that it doesn’t take much to care for others.”
Anyone is welcome to drop off an item at any of the YMCA’s After School Care centres which are located in Arataki, Bellevue, Bethlehem, Gate Pa, Greerton, Mount, Papamoa and Welcome Bay (check out www.ymcatauranga.org.nz for exact locations). Alternatively, a collection box will be available at the Y’s head office at 428 Devonport Road.
