Graduates Notch Up Two Listed Wins
Last week's racing saw two Karaka graduates gain valuable black type with Celeris at Otaki on Friday and Loose Change at Wanganui on Saturday.
Friday's Levin Classic day at Otaki saw the Leo Molloy trained mare Celeris (Fusaichi Pegasus x Cuphill) put in a good performance to win the Listed $45,000 Chainey's Panasonic Levin Stakes (1200m). In a strong field which included Bulginbaah, Tip the Wink, O'Cartier and Atapi, Mark Du Plessis rode the mare confidently and she proved too strong in the home straight winning by a length.
In a light career of only nine starts, the five-year-old has won on four occasions with four additional placings for stakes in excess of $90,000.
The Fusaichi Pegasus mare has had some serious problems during her career with osteoarthritis forcing her retirement, but her trainer Leo Molloy has managed to bring her back to the track to claim the biggest racing achievement of her career. She now carries the all important black type with the win which will markedly increase her value as a broodmare.
Celeris was bought by Daniel Nakhle from the 2007 Karaka Select Yearling Sale for $60,000 from Trelawney Stud. She is now likely to head to New Zealand's premier sprint races, the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap and the Group 1 Railway Stakes in January.
The Listed $50,000 Cambridge Thoroughbred Sales Wanganui Cup (2040m) at Wanganui saw New Zealand Bloodstock graduates quinella the feature race with Loose Change (Faltaat x Wyndam Starlette) and Headsup (Thorn Park x Pensar) the first two home.
Loose Change's trainers David Haworth & Matt Dixon decided to put blinkers on the six-year-old after his last start second to Regal Governor. The addition proved a wise choice as the son of Faltaat registered the biggest track win of his career, coming four wide on the turn to run down the leading pack and win by a short head.
Loose Change was bought by Palace Lodge from the 2006 Ready to Run Sale from Valley Park Stud for $24,000. The win has taken the six-year-old's stakes earnings to over $100,000 from his 25 starts. It was also Loose Change's sixth career win and will put him in good stead for the Group 2 Wellington Cup (2400m) in January.
Racing Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Malaysia over the weekend has seen 24 individual Karaka graduates win their races.
New Zealand sires were prominent in the list with Haunui Farm's Elusive City notching up three wins, including his up and comer My Glory who was very impressive in only his fourth race day appearance in Hong Kong. Mapperley Stud's Kings Chapel had a win a piece in Macau and Singapore. The results are shown in the table below.
